Nitrous Oxide

Physical and Chemical Properties

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a clear, colorless, oxidizing liquefied gas with a slightly sweet odor. The product is stable at room temperature. While classified by the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) as a nonflammable gas, nitrous oxide will support combustion and can detonate at temperatures in excess of 650 °C (1202 °F).

Uses

Medical nitrous oxide is typically used as an analgesic, often in combination with oxygen for anesthesia. Nitrous oxide is also used in cryosurgery.

Nitrous oxide is also supplied to commercial packagers in food processing as a propellant. Nitrous oxide is used as an oxidizer in rocketry and the automotive industries to increase power output of engines.
